What are the best language learning methods?

First please no answers that include taking a class or the Rosseta Stone system. So anyways I'm trying to learn Greek and Japanese. I'd like to become fluent in each and have no problem doing multiple methods at once (software,audio tapes,books). I'd really like to know some of your tips.
