What is an example of cognitive learning?

I don't really understand what it is.

I read a bit about this in my friends psych book today, never taken the class so get some updates on this answer and don't use mine on a test or nothing, but, it had an example of a child who was depressed after taking a test. She said that the bad grade made her depressed, the therapist asked, if that's true everybody with a bad grade would be here but they're not all coming for help, why do you think that is? then the therapist went on to explain to the girl that it's her thinking that makes her depressed, she thinks, it's the end of the world because I had a bad grade when it isn't, and you have to change your thinking. In conclusion, I believe cognitive learning is a process of learning that is done by making somebody learn and interpret situations differently to have a better and different outlook on perspective(s) in order to be better and happy.

Seeing and hearing what a person does can imitated, and a person can be conditioned to do the same thing. But in order to process the significance of that conditioning, one must form his/her own thoughts and understanding of those actions. And only human beings possess the capacity to do this. You wouldn't be able to understand what I'm saying right now if you hadn't learned these words and figured out how they all fit together within their context (on your own) if you've never experienced cognitive learning.
